Aljezur, Where the Algarve Drives Straight Into Your Heart
When I take the exit at Lagos towards Aljezur, I literally step into another world. This is the Algarve you don’t know. No resort-packed roundabouts, but mountains, hairpin bends and raw nature. First it feels rugged and Scandinavian, then almost Swiss, with views that naturally make you slow down and stay quiet for a moment.
Near Raposeira, the road suddenly feels like California. Carmel, Highway One vibes – but without the Instagram crowds. And then there’s Rogil: flat, wide open, almost Dutch. As if the polder decided to take a sunny holiday in Portugal.
The people here are pure. So is the food. Sweet potatoes with real flavour, locally grown mushrooms, peanuts straight from the land. And yes, the cliffs and surf beaches… Arrifana easily belongs to the world’s best.
Small shops, a great baker on the main street, and often not a word of English. A problem? No. That’s exactly the charm.
Aljezur, I love you. And secretly, I hope you never change.
