After years as a successful entrepreneur, Peter Cruiming took on a new, stubborn mission: to eat his way across Portugal and tell you — honestly — exactly where the good tables are. Every review is his own. Booked as a normal guest and written from his own seat.
Almancil · Algarve
One thread runs through Peter's whole career: bringing the right people together, at scale. After early years in international hospitality — including a spell with Golden Tulip Hotels — he became a serial entrepreneur in digital matchmaking. He founded and sold Nationale Vacaturebank, one of the Netherlands' best-known job platforms, and then built Jobbird. Two companies, one idea: connect the right person with the right opportunity.
When that same instinct followed him to Portugal, it simply found a new subject — the table. The same quiet satisfaction of a perfect match, this time between a hungry guest and the place they didn't yet know they were looking for.
He settled in Almancil, in the heart of the Algarve's golden triangle, and found a region full of brilliant kitchens that almost nobody was writing about honestly. The loudest praise went to the places best at marketing — not the ones best at cooking. To a born matchmaker, that mismatch was unbearable: the right guests and the right tables simply weren't finding each other.
So he started doing the simplest, hardest thing — going out unannounced, photographing every dish at the table and writing down the truth. One restaurant at a time, that became Hotspots: the same matchmaking, now between hungry people and the places genuinely worth their evening. First across the Algarve, now all of Portugal.
Peter's promise is simple and absolute: he never accepts a free meal, and no restaurant can buy a review, a point or a place on a list. He books like any guest, eats like any guest, and pays the full bill himself. His only client is you, the reader.
It is also why Hotspots only ever publishes good experiences. A disappointing visit never goes online — the kitchen gets Peter's private feedback, a chance to grow, and an unannounced second visit. A spot on Hotspots has to be earned. That is exactly what makes it mean something.
It started in the south, one honest review at a time — and it keeps travelling north.
Peter reviewed his way across the south restaurant by restaurant, building the trusted Algarve list — every price range, from a €12 tasca to a Michelin dining room, all visited in person.
The Algarve Top 250The same honest fork now points north — deep into Lisbon's neighbourhoods and the Cascais coast, where a new wave of kitchens is doing some of the country's most exciting cooking.
Newest reviewsFrom Porto and the north to the Alentejo, Hotspots is becoming one honest guide to the whole country — with the flagship HOTSPOTS 100 crowning the best tables of the year.
One country. Every hotspot.A 60,000-strong community that spots the gems, an app to order your dish right at the table, and the one list that can make a restaurant's year.
Peter can be at one table a night — but 60,000+ food-loving locals and regulars are everywhere. The Insiders are Hotspots' secret weapon: the people who know which new place is worth the wait.
At a true Hotspot the guide doesn't stop at the review. The integrated restaurant app lets you browse the menu, find Peter's must-order dishes and order right from your table.
The flagship: Portugal's honest top table. A nomination is one of the highest compliments in Portuguese hospitality — because it can only be earned at the table, never through an agency or a cheque.
Only the good ones make it online. That is the whole promise.
Follow the honest fork across Portugal — and never waste an evening on the wrong table again.
