The Golden Triangle of the Algarve – home to Quinta do Lago, Vale do Lobo, and Vilamoura – is by far the most exclusive area in southern Portugal. Here live billionaires like Denis O’Brien, dozens of centi-millionaires (>$100 million), and more than 250 multi-millionaires during the summer season. And yet, this luxury hotspot counts only one Michelin-starred restaurant: Gusto by Heinz Beck at the Conrad Algarve Hotel.
That’s the big question: is it the restaurants, or is it Michelin? The Golden Triangle is packed with world-class chefs, refined menus, and top-notch service. However, Michelin Portugal seems to favor regional balance – spreading stars between Tavira, Lagos, and Almancil, instead of rewarding several fine dining temples in one area. It feels more political than culinary.
