Two-Michelin-star dining that actually earns the hype — heavenly tasting menus without a hint of stiffness.

There are tasting menus you endure and tasting menus you remember for years. Henrique Sá Pessoa's Alma, tucked behind a discreet door in Chiado, is firmly the second kind — and our highest score to date.

Two stars, zero stiffness

What sets Alma apart from most two-star rooms is the mood. The service is precise but warm; nobody whispers, nobody hovers. You're encouraged to ask questions, to laugh, to take your time. Fine dining as it should feel in Lisbon: generous, not solemn.

"The Costa Alentejana menu is the single best sequence of dishes we've eaten in Portugal. Full stop."Peter Cruiming, at the table

The menus

Two tastings anchor the experience. Costa Alentejana leans on the coast — carabineiro, sea bass, percebes — while Origens tells a broader Portuguese story. The bread service alone (sourdough, seaweed butter) would justify a detour.

Is it worth €200?

At this level, value means never wondering where the money went. Every course lands with intent, the pacing is flawless, and the pairing pours are generous. We left three hours later feeling it was money well spent — which, at this price, is the highest compliment we can give.

The verdict — Portugal, on a plate

Alma is the benchmark: the cooking of a chef at the top of his powers, served with genuine Lisbon warmth. Book weeks ahead, come hungry, order the Costa Alentejana.

Good to know

How far ahead should I book?

For weekends, four to six weeks. Weekday lunch is the insider move — same kitchen, easier table.

Is there a dress code?

Smart casual. No jacket required; Lisbon elegance is relaxed.

Vegetarian options?

Yes — announce it when booking and the kitchen builds a dedicated tasting around the vegetable larder.
